City to Resume Normal Operations on Feb. 22

Thank you for your patience and flexibility during Winter Storm Kingston! The City will resume regular operations on Saturday, Feb. 22. See the latest updates below:

City Facilities

  • The City will resume collecting trash and recycling on Saturday, starting with routes that were not serviced on Wednesday, followed by Thursday and then Friday collections. Crews will collect on Sunday and Monday morning as well. Keep your cans curbside and until they are serviced.
  • Most Virginia Beach Public Library branches will reopen at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 22. The Pungo-Blackwater Library and TCC/Joint-Use Library will open at 9 a.m., Feb. 22.
  • All recreation centers will reopen at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 22. Most outdoor activity areas, including trails, courts and playgrounds, will be closed due to snow coverage.
  • The Princess Anne County Training School/Union Kempsville High School Museum is closed on Saturday, Feb. 22.
  • The Thoroughgood House is closed through Sunday, Feb. 23.

Trash & Recycling

Due to icy roads in neighborhoods, the City will resume collecting trash on Saturday, beginning with routes that did not get collected on Wednesday, before moving onto Thursday's and Friday's routes. Crews will also collect trash on Sunday and Monday morning. Thank you residents for your patience and flexibility.

Residents are advised to place their carts at the curb today and keep them there until they are serviced.

Please note that this schedule is subject to the safe accessibility of neighborhoods by waste collection trucks.

The Waste Management office, Landfill, and West Neck Recycling Center are closed.

Past Updates

Due to impacts from Winter Storm Kingston, most City of Virginia Beach facilities and offices will be closed Friday, Feb. 21, with the following exceptions:

  • The Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center will open at 9 a.m., Feb. 21.
  • The Sandler Center for Performing Arts will hold its 8 p.m. show, “Annie,” Feb. 21.

Trash collection will also remain suspended Feb. 21. Public Works will re-evaluate secondary roadways on Friday to determine if collection can resume on Saturday.

Crews have prioritized snow clearing and de-icing at recreation centers and libraries with the goal of allowing them to open at their regular hours on Saturday, Feb. 22.

Due to expected snowfall from Winter Storm Kingston, City of Virginia Beach facilities and offices will be closed on Wednesday, Feb. 19.

Waste and recycling services for Feb. 19 will take place as long as road conditions permit. Residents must have their carts at the curb by 6 a.m. Crews will begin their routes earlier to cover as much of the service day as possible.

Residents are advised to stay indoors to avoid anticipated hazardous road conditions as much as possible. Public Works crews and Parks & Recreation Landscape Services are treating snow routes and critical public safety buildings. The City will continue to closely monitor the storm’s development and coordinate efforts to ensure readiness for any impacts we may experience.
